Understanding Grief

Grief is the natural response to loss, and loss comes in many forms. The death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a job loss, a health diagnosis, or any significant life change can bring grief to your door. At Bluebird Counseling Center, we believe that no grief is too small to deserve support, and no timeline is too long. Grief doesn't follow a straight path. It can look like deep sadness, anger, numbness, guilt, or even unexpected moments of relief. Our therapists create a safe, non-judgemental space where your grief is honored exactly as it is.

Frequently asked questions

What is grief counseling and how does it help?

Grief counseling is a therapeutic process that provides a safe space to process the pain of loss.  A grief therapist at Bluebird Counseling Center will help you work through your emotions, make sense of your experience, and find ways to carry your grief while moving forward in life.

How long does grief counseling last?

There is no set timeline for grief therapy, it depends on the nature of your loss and your personal healing process.  Some clients benefit from 8-12 sessions; others prefer ongoing support over several months or years.  Your therapist will honor your pace and adjust the plan as you grow.

Is grief counseling only for death-related losses?

No.  Grief counseling supports all forms of loss, including divorce, job loss, miscarriage, health diagnoses, and major life transitions.  If a loss has significantly affected your life, you deserve support, regardless of the cause.

What is complicated grief?

Complicated grief (also called prolonged grief) occurs when grief remains intense and disabling for an extended period, often a year or more.  Symptoms may include persistent longing, difficulty accepting the loss, bitterness, or feeling that life is meaningless.  Nobody can tell you how long you should be grieving, grieving is never wrong, no matter what other's say or think - your pain and loss is valid.  Specialized therapy can help you find some balance, for yourself.

Can I do grief counseling online?

Yes.  Some of the providers at Bluebird Counseling Center offer secure telehealth sessions so you can access compassionate grief support from home.  Online grief therapy can be just as effective as in-person.

How do I know if I need grief counseling?

If grief is interfering with your daily functioning, relationships, sleep, or sense of hope, or if you feel stuck, isolated, or unable to cope, grief counseling may be helpful for you.  Reaching out is a meaningful act of self-care.
